UNIVER.SYS 1.0 (2022–2024)
After abandoning Silicon Medley due to it becoming increasingly convoluted and directionless, I decided to create my own original universe in late 2022. I called this world UNIVER.SYS.
In the early version of UNIVER.SYS, the core species were called TANs (Technological Anthropomorphs), a clever nod to the OS-tans. The world was set up as a constructed world called Innovatia rather than being explicitly on Earth. I intended UNIVER.SYS to embrace artistic liberties instead of adhering to historical accuracy.
There were aspects I was proud of while developing UNIVER.SYS 1.0, such as creating fictional names for the Ensembles (city-states representing real-life companies) and the TAN characters. I also enjoyed developing the concept of TANs as idol singers, inspired by my interest in Japanese idol culture. However, this iteration didn't last long.
Why did it end?
When developing UNIVER.SYS 1.0, I focused too heavily on distinguishing it from Silicon Medley and the English OS-tan shared universe, particularly from their bleak, almost dystopian approach. This led me to create an overly idealistic and happy universe where most rivalries were resolved peacefully. This swing to the opposite extreme of the idealism-cynicism spectrum wasn't effective and brought its own issues.
Another problem was carrying over the "archive angle," where every TAN from bygone eras had their character development already completed in the "present day" and followed the actual history of the systems. This approach was partly influenced by the English shared universe's retrocomputing-based faction. Though I tried to put my own spin on it, it ultimately felt redundant since I didn't intend to create a retrocomputing-based story.
UNIVER.SYS 2.0 (2025–)
I made major changes to UNIVER.SYS after creating a provisional version in late 2024 (dubbed version 1.618). In 2025, I began developing UNIVER.SYS 2.0.
In this new version, Innovatia was renamed to the eponymous UNIVER.SYS, and I renamed TANs to Techne (both singular and plural) to emphasize their capabilities as creators and to separate them from the OS-tans. I also rewrote the Techne to move away from the archive angle.
UNIVER.SYS 2.0 also reclassified the Techne, shifting from technology type categories (mainframes, operating systems, mobile devices, etc.) to classes based on their primary skills and occupations. In this version, humans no longer exist, and there are no human software developers coexisting with the Techne—because they themselves are Techne.
