Solaris-chan (Japanese:ソラリスちゃん) is a magical girl character who personifies the Solaris operating system.

History

Solaris-chan's website was published by Hotaruya in around 1999, the same year as Magical Toko, with the earliest entry in her site dating back to January 26, 1999.

She was designed by Gō Watanabe, who granted permission for Solaris-chan's design to be used for the website in January 29.

In the Magical Toko-chan Project imaginary anime, she has a dedicated episode script.[1]

Character

Solaris-chan is Magical Toko's sister, though the latter is not aware of it. She and Toko attend the Hiejū Gakuen (Japanese: 比恵寿学園), and they also participate in the same club activities. After learning about Toko-chan's existence, she escaped from the System V Principality (Japanese: SystemV公国).

She was originally born in BSD Land under the childhood name Sun, though she got married into the System V principality, before escaping and becoming a magical girl. Her transformation device is a Java ring, and she has a Sun Spear as a weapon, which can do the special move "Shine Spark". She acquired "Shine Spark" at a young age, a skill passed down from generations in the Sun family. It reprograms the heightened emotional energy and releases it instantly, like a magical iaido. Solaris-chan has mastered both BSD and SystemV magic, and eventually mastered POSIX.

Trivia

  • Solaris-chan also has a magical companion, (referred to as "navigator" in the site) named Daimo, depicted as a bear.
  • As a civilian on earth, she goes by Yōko Hibino (日比野陽子), and is a classmate of Magical Toko's older brother.
  • Her childhood name Sun, marriage into the System V Principality, and mastery on both BSD and System V magic may reference Solaris' historic release as SunOS, and how its early versions 1.0 to 4.1.4 were based on BSD, before switching to System V in version 5 and later, after it was rebranded as Solaris.
