Omaneko-kun (Japanese: おまねこくん) is one of the official mascots of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, originally serving as one of 14 mascot characters of the Omaezaki sub-base.
History
Omaneko-kun first appeared on March 28, 2023.[1] Later that year, he would make a PR appearance at the furry-themed doujin event Kemoket.[2]
Like all of the other mascots of the base, he was designed by a member of the force. He is not the only furry mascot, with a rat boy, Hamu ChunChun, likely based on the Nekozuka's rat-themed counterpart, also existing alongside him[2], along with two female characters. Together, the official shop refers to them as "MiliKemo".
In 2024, at Wonder Festival 2024 (Summer), a 1/9 scale figure of Omaneko-kun was showcased.[3]
Omaneko has various official goods released through the BOOTH store "Military Online Shop".[4] An Omaneko dakimakura item was also added to the game War Thunder in 2025.[5]
In 2024, it was announced that Omaneko and Hamu ChunChun would be "transferring" from the Omaezaki base. While it's unclear what exactly this entails, it doesn't seem to be an announcement of retirement, as the announcement also mentioned seeing them "continue to evolve". It is assumed that the designer of the two is transferring to another garrison.[1]
Character
Omaneko-kun is a furry cat boy with an effeminate appearance. He is a member of the "1st Nya-nya police force" and is currently stationed at the Omaezaki base because he wanted to play with the radar dome. He is noted as being good at sports and hating water.[6]
His character design is directly based on the Nekozuka (cat grave) historical landmark in Omaezaki. He also appears to be based on the nekomata youkai, having a forked tail.
