Nix Bellevue is a major character in UNIVER.SYS. She is a TAN (Technological Anthropomorph) from Logiciel, and member of the Whizzy Wigs idol group.

History

The first design of Nix was posted on Twitter in August 27, 2022 [1], however she was first published in OS-tans.moe on April 8, 2023.

Character

Nix has a cool-headed and logical personality, which helped her in her early days training under Logiciel, maintaining their computer software. However she is also known to be interested in pop culture and entertainment, including pop idols. She got introduced to idols through her encounters with other TANs, and she gained interest in being one. Nix later debuted under the Whizzy Wigs idol group with Lisa and Estelle.

Outside of her work in computers and entertainment, Nix made creative uses of her skills as a TAN, such as constructing artistic installations, or simply trying to pass the time or pull practical jokes at people.

Technical

  • Nix is a personification of Xenix, a Unix distribution by Microsoft from 1980. It was also the most popular Unix system in the 1980s.
  • Her name is derived from Xenix itself, and Bellevue, the city where Microsoft's headquarters used to be in early to mid 1980s.
    • Depending on the language, Nix's name can also mean "night", "snow", or "nothingness".
  • Her color scheme references Xenix's software box[2], interface, and floppy disk sleeves [3].
  • Her cosmic theme is based on this Unix World magazine cover about Xenix in 1985. [4]
  • Nix's occupation as an idol is a reference to Xenix being a popular Unix distribution in the 1980s, which also include uses in SDF Public Access Unix System[5]
  • Nix's job in Logiciel was based on how Xenix was used in Microsoft's mail servers [6] until migrating to Exchange Server in the mid 1990s.
  • Nix's rebellious side is based on Xenix's features, which deviated from the Unix philosophy of modularity.
    • Xenix is also considered a separate Unix distribution, neither belonging to System V or BSD branch of Unix.[7]

  • She is mostly the technical brains of Whizzy Wigs, often using her skills in instruments and other equipment.
  • Surprisingly, Nix has a good eye in fashion, and customized her own outfits more than her Logiciel peers.
