Me-tan (Japanese: Meたん, Me-tan), also known as simply Me or ME spelled out (えむいー[1], Emui), is an OS-tan personifying Windows Millennium Edition.
History
Me-tan was published on August 6, 2003 on the Nijiura board of the Futaba Channel (二次元裏@ふたば)[2]. It can be assumed that she quickly caught up and became very popular, inspiring others from the community to create more characters for other OSes and build the OS-tan Universe.
She appeared as one of the main characters in the Trouble Windows Opening published on April 2004.
Also during that month, Netrunner released the third part of their trading cards, one of which depicted Me-tan. Previous unauthorized use of Futaba Channel works already sparked indignation, so the incident caused further outrage and prompted the author to explicitly forbid use of Me-tan by SoftBank Publishing (which owns Netrunner) and threaten to take legal action in case of further unauthorized use[3].
In 2005, the Futaba Channel community commissioned the Yūyu company to produce a Me-tan figure, which became obtainable as a garage kit during the Wonder Festival 2005 Winter, and then a 1/8 PVC figure from mid May.
On July 2005, the Trouble Windows OS-tan Fan Book was also released, featuring small Me-tan, 95-tan and XP-tan figures as well as a rich collection of OS-tan works and explanations.
Appearance
Me-tan has green hair in two parted braids as pigtails with an ahoge, and green eyes. She wears a Blue maid outfit and with a pure white apron over it and a red orange ribbon fastening on the collar has an exclamation mark (used to indicate an error on the active desktop). Her ahoge expresses emotions, can fly with it, and is also a bone. Her design was likely inspired by Canal Vorfeed (キャナル・ヴォルフィード) from the 1998 anime Lost Universe (ロスト・ユニバース).
In an early design, she had a dark violet dress and white pantyhoses. It was changed to better match the Windows Me's colors and due to someone pointing it out[4][5].
The author stated that her design was "random" and intended to heavily change as artworks were exchanged, though it turned out that besides the colors, only the cowlick changed by growing over time[5].

Character
Me-tan is portrayed as a clumsy yet cheerful maid. Just like Windows Me in real life, she freezes or crashes suddenly and runs out of CPU without warning. She is often portrayed wielding a negi (leek/Welsh onion) as an item (inspired by NEGiES, a Japanese personal firewall for freeware Windows), or rarely a crowbar.
In several derivative portrayals, Me-tan’s personality and relationships with other OS-tans were expanded further.
