Mac-tan (Japanese: ＭＡＣたん) is an OS-tan that personifies the generic Mac OS line, and sometimes Mac OS X.

History

An illustration of Mac-tan was already present as early as in 2003, shown in the earliest archive of OS-tan Vault homepage.[2] However, a gallery for Mac-tan was not present until 2004.[3]

Design

In early drawings, Mac-tan appears in her standard platinum-white body suit (alluding to the iMac/OSX design motif). Sometimes she is also depicted with a rainbow-colored apple on her head, as throwback to the classic Macintosh.

Her eye color tend to vary from green, blue, or rainbow-colored.

Character

Not much is known about Mac-tan's character, though she is usually portrayed as a rival or even enemy of the Windows OS-tans.[4][5] Some interpretations further developed her relationships with other OS-tans.

In some depictions, such as the Nijikaku fighting game [6], and this artwork by Shimuro, she is referred to as Cyan (シアン) or Siam (シャム). [1]

Trivia

  • Mac-tan's nicknames Cyan and Siam may reference the codenames of Mac OS X.[7]
