Linux-tan (Japanese:りなっくすたん) is an OS-tan representing the family of Linux operating systems. Her design ranges from being a penguin to a girl in a steampunk uniform.
History
Linux-tan can be presumed to have first appeared in 2003,[1] as her penguin design was already present in OS-tan Vault's homepage as early as October 4, 2003. However, the Linux-tan gallery wasn't available until early 2004.[2]
Linux-tan also has an appearance in Page 10 of Trouble Windows OS-tan Fan Book, along with Linspire-tan. She also has a brief cameo in the Trouble Windows Opening at frame 25a, depicted as a girl in a horned helmet on the top left corner.
Portrayals
Linux-tan is commonly portrayed both as a bearded penguin, and as a girl with long black hair and red eyes wearing a blue steampunk-styled uniform with flippers as shoes. Both designs feature a horned helmet with a gear and letter "K", possibly referencing the Linux KDE. The design also incorporated the logo of GNOME, and a spear with ribbons referencing Linux bootloaders.
Not much is known about Linux-tan's personality due to being an obscure character, however several derivative depictions of her exist.
