Ipo-chan, originally stylized as I.Po-chan[1], is a fanmade mascot of the Indonesian web filtering service Internet Positif. She is designed by the artist Rouzille Erzabalna from Spring Roll Circle.
History
Ipo-chan was first published on Spring Roll Circle's Facebook page on July 26, 2015[1], as an imagining if Internet Positif had a moe anthropomorphized mascot.
"If Internet Positif had a gijinka version. Her name is I.Po-chan. Her hobby is blocking websites. She may look intimidating from the outside, but she can be easily bullied."
According to Jurnal Otaku's interview with Rouzille Erzabalna, the idea behind Ipo-chan was conceived shortly after the then-Minister of Communication and Information of Indonesia stepped down from office in October 2014. Rouzille, however, didn't publicly unveil the character until after seeing the positive feedback over another gijinka of two popular Indonesian instant noodle brands created by pixiv user Valoreins.[2]
Ipo-chan's popularity was picked up by several Indonesian news sites, and spawned a thread on the Kaskus forum site.[3] On August 2, YouTuber Ace Yoen uploaded a Miku Miku Dance (MMD) animation video titled "Ipo-chan – Marine Dreamin'", which gained more than 19,000 views in less than a week.[4]
