Fox Konko (Japanese: ふぉっくす紺子) was the Japanese mascot of Foxconn, a computer parts manufacturer. She was later repurposed as a character supporting the revitalization of Akihabara.
She was designed and is drawn by Tsukasa Nagano (永野つかさ).
History
On December 9, 2006, some tech journals reported the debut of Fox Konko as she appeared in the manual localized by Unistar of the ATX Cube G965 computer, and also speculated about her role, mentioning the moe mascot Gigabyko, though there were no statement from Foxconn nor Unistar at the time[2][3]. She reappeared on the 28th in a campaign in which trading cards depicting her were distributed when buying a graphics card[4][5].
More campaigns featuring Fox Konko were regularly run and she became fairly popular, though over a few years, people started forgetting about her. On March 2010, Links International Co., Ltd. took over ownership of Fox Konko[1]. Ascii.jp noted that she was making a comeback that year, and started working on a serialized yonkoma to support her[6]
On February 25, 2014, Media Bank Co., Ltd. took ownership of Fox Konko and repurposed her role as a "supporting character for the Akiba PC industry"[7][8]. Over the next years, many campaigns featuring her were run, sometimes with other moe mascots such as Shizuku Suishō[9], Akuko[10] or Sunoko-tan[11]. However, as years passed, her influence again diminished as shown in the Akihabara Moe Characters Contest results: she remained in the Top 10 from 2010 to 2016, before dropping to the 16th and 15th place, becoming unranked in 2019, and finally no longer being mentioned.
However, she was never formally retired, and even made a notable appearance in 2023 with the Fox Konko-chan E-Book[12], which includes previous works such as yonkomas or wallpapers. Kadokawa owns the copyright of the work, implying that a third ownership transfer happened at some point. Tsukasa Nagano still publishes artworks of Fox Konko on her X account[13].
