98SE-tan (Japanese: 98SEたん), also known as Secchan (せっちゃん), is an OS-tan that personifies Windows 98 Second Edition.

History

The OS-tan Vault listed a "98-tan" entry (but not "98SE-tan") since at least October 4, 2003 so it is possible that she debuted in 2003, though it can be speculated that it was initially intended to have only one OS-tan representing both editions of Windows 98, and Secchan did not yet exist in her current form. Only one "98-tan" thumbnail is retrievable via Archive.org, and may be an early design of 98-tan or 98SE-tan though it looks more like the former.

She is featured as simply "98" in a full image of the Trouble Windows Opening, published on April 2004.

Design

Secchan has an appearance of a middle school girl in a turquoise sailor uniform and a yellow bow, and has short, periwinkle hair that is tied to the side, In the early days, her design was a boxy figure akin to Vulcan from the anime "Zatch Bell", known as "Konjiki no Gash" (金色のガッシュ!!) in Japan. However the current design eventually became official, despite the Vulcan box figure still being used as either a toy, or something she can go inside of to either hide, or control with.

She has a sister called Hacchan, who represents the original Windows 98.

Secchan is also shy, but unlike Hacchan, she is more easily angered. She is a fan of professional wrestling, thanks to Hassan's (male version of Hacchan) experience as a wrestler. She likes to say "Mau mau" (まうまう).^{[Challenged]ⓘ}

In Shared Folder! (2006), her profile describes her as a hard working girl always studying to keep up with technological advances. It also mentions that she and 98-tan look like twins, but they are not, and 98SE-tan cares about her hairstyle to not be mistaken with 98-tan. Both are close roommates.
